The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has taken strict action in the aftermath of recent protests within the income tax cadre, suspending eight high-ranking tax officials, including Monalisa Shahreen Sushmita, a prominent figure in the movement.

The decision to suspend these officers was executed on Tuesday, July 15. According to sources, income tax cadre officials, fearing further suspensions, had already called off their protests and even approached the NBR Chairman in batches, seeking clemency. However, the move did not prevent further disciplinary measures.

According to sources, the suspended officials are: Masuma Khatun, Joint Tax Commissioner of Tax Zone-2; Murad Ahmed, Joint Tax Commissioner of Tax Zone-15; Mohammad Morshed Uddin Khan, Joint Tax Commissioner of Kushtia Tax Zone; Monalisa Shahreen Sushmita, Joint Tax Commissioner of Noakhali Tax Zone; Md. Ashraful Alam Pradhan, Joint Tax Commissioner of Cox’s Bazar Tax Zone; Mohammad Shihabul Islam, Deputy Tax Commissioner of Khulna Tax Zone; Ms. Nushrat Jahan Shumi, Deputy Tax Commissioner of Rangpur Tax Zone; and Imam Tawhid Hasan Shakil, Deputy Tax Commissioner of Comilla Tax Zone.

The suspensions were officially announced on Tuesday, July 15, as part of the NBR’s ongoing efforts to restore discipline within the tax administration after widespread protests rocked the department.

This latest development marks a significant escalation in the ongoing crisis within the NBR, as the administration continues to take firm steps against those involved in the protest movement. The suspended officials were reportedly at the forefront of the demonstrations demanding administrative reforms and better service conditions.

The NBR has yet to make an official statement regarding the reasons behind the specific suspensions, but sources indicate that further action may follow if unrest continues among the income tax cadre.
