Mahdi Amin, senior political advisor to BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, has issued a detailed statement refuting what he described as “ten pieces of deliberate misinformation” surrounding the recent brutal killing of businessman Sohaag in front of Mitford Hospital in Dhaka. The statement aims to separate facts from rumors and demand accountability through a fair investigation, while exposing what he claims are politically motivated efforts to malign the BNP.
In his statement, Mahdi Amin outlines and addresses ten major claims that have spread online and in media circles since the killing:
1. Are the attackers in the video the same people BNP expelled?
No. The individuals seen in the viral video assaulting the victim with stones and bricks are different from those expelled by the party. The expelled members were not present at the crime scene. Identifying the actual killers and arresting them remains the top priority, Mahdi said.
2. Were those expelled by BNP present during the murder?
No. Their names were controversially added to the FIR after the incident, despite not being at the scene. BNP expelled them as a precaution, respecting public sentiment and commitment to justice. Only an impartial investigation can reveal the truth.
3. Has police arrested the people seen in CCTV footage?
Surprisingly, no. The killers captured in the footage remain free, and many of them were not even named in the first information report (FIR). The victim’s family has repeatedly said that the main culprits are being protected, and the true nature of the killing remains obscured.
4. Was this murder related to extortion?
No. According to local police and witnesses, the killing stemmed from a power struggle over local business and influence, not extortion.
5. What is the family’s stance?
The victim’s family claims the second version of the FIR removed the real suspects and added innocent individuals. The victim’s mother unknowingly signed it, and they demand justice for what they say is a manipulated list of accused.
6. What is the police saying?
According to DC Mohammad Jasim Uddin of Lalbagh Division, investigators have not found any political affiliation among the suspects. He added that further arrests and interrogations may reveal new information.
7. Did the incident go viral immediately?
No. The viral videos and misleading materials began surfacing two days after the murder, on Friday, July 11, suggesting a pre-planned online disinformation campaign.
8. Are the visuals and narratives online accurate?
No. Mahdi Amin claimed that pre-designed photo cards and videos were released from specific pages and profiles, implying prior preparation of a propaganda campaign to manipulate public opinion.
9. Why is BNP leadership being targeted?
Despite taking disciplinary action against accused members, BNP leaders are facing abusive language and misinformation attacks. Mahdi Amin argues this is a fascist tactic to weaken the party’s popularity during a sensitive political period.
10. Is the government handling this effectively?
The killing in a crowded area like Mitford is a stark reminder of poor law enforcement and a culture of impunity, Mahdi said. Instead of focusing on justice, vested interests are spreading hate content and conspiracy narratives online. Citizens expect the interim government to take strong and transparent actions to restore stability and uphold the rule of law.
Mahdi Amin concluded his message by reaffirming the BNP’s commitment to peaceful politics and law and order, urging all parties to avoid provocation and uphold democratic values.
