BNP leader Salahuddin Ahmed warned during national consensus commission today as if the power of the executive branch is reduced, the balance in the governance of the state will be disrupted.
Salahuddin Ahmed said this on the 20th day of the second phase of the Consensus Commission’s discussions with political parties at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital on Monday.
The BNP leader said that BNP is providing maximum cooperation in the initiative to amend the constitution so that dictatorship or fascism can never arise in the country again.
Despite these advances, the BNP leader expressed concern about the power of the executive branch. He said, “The executive branch is accountable to the parliament as well as to the people. but if there is no authority vested upon executive branch, only responsibility and accountability is not enough for effective governance of the state.”
Salahuddin also added that if the executive branch’s hands and feet are tied only for the appointment of constitutional and statutory institutions, it can create obstacles for the future. He said, ‘The executive branch must be strong, not weak, to meet the expectations of the people.’
BNP is participating in the dialogue with constructive goals. where there is fundamental disagreement, refraining from participation or expressing differences is also the language of democracy- he cited again
Salahuddin Ahmed also said, ‘No one has claimed that there will be consensus on all issues. There will be disagreements, differences of opinion, and it is through them that the struggle for democracy moves forward.’
We do not think that anyone should be forced into consensus by issuing a note of dissent. Consensus means walking the path with everyone. If BNP does not participate, the question remains as to how national consensus will be established’- he added.
Rather he assured that BNP will participate the dialogue and prepared for positive discussion in future.
